Burgruine Wellheim is the impressive ruin of a medieval hilltop castle perched on limestone cliffs above the town of Wellheim in Bavaria’s Wellheim Dry Valley.

Built in the 12th century, the fortress served as the seat of local nobles and later passed through the hands of several powerful families and regional rulers. Over the centuries, the castle played an important defensive and administrative role, but it gradually lost its importance and was abandoned in the 18th century. Parts of the structure were later dismantled, leaving behind the ruins visible today.

The most striking surviving feature is the tall Romanesque keep, which still dominates the landscape alongside sections of the defensive walls and former residential buildings. Today, the castle ruins are a popular landmark and viewpoint, offering visitors scenic views over the historic valley and surrounding Franconian Jura countryside.
