Burgruine Zabelstein is the ruin of a medieval hilltop castle located near Hundelshausen in the Steigerwald region of Bavaria, Germany. The fortress was founded around the year 1000 by the noble Lords of Zabelstein and later became one of the most important and secure strongholds of the Prince-Bishops of Würzburg. The castle played a major administrative and defensive role for centuries, serving as a safe repository for valuable documents and treasures. It was destroyed during the German Peasants’ War in 1525, rebuilt in the late 16th century, and then severely damaged by a fire in 1689, after which it gradually fell into ruin. Today, visitors can explore the remaining walls and foundations of the castle, which stand on a scenic hilltop with panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.
