Burgstall auf dem Schlosshügel

Weidenberg, Germany, Germany

---

Burgstall auf dem Schlosshügel is the site of a lost early medieval hill fortress located above the village of Sophienthal near Weidenberg in Bavaria.

Believed to date from the 11th century, it was a motte-and-bailey style fortification built on a strategically important hill at the edge of the Fichtel Mountains. Although no buildings remain standing today, the site still preserves visible earthworks such as ditches, ramparts, and the remains of the former defensive layout.

Historians believe it served to monitor and protect important trade and travel routes and may also have functioned as a border fortification in the Franconian-Bavarian frontier region. Today, the Burgstall is an archaeological and historical landmark accessible by footpaths through the surrounding forest. Information boards along local hiking routes help visitors understand the site's medieval origins and its role in the history of the Weidenberg area.
