Cabo Frio is a coastal city in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, located on a peninsula where the Atlantic coastline sharply turns north, about 130 km east of the city of Rio de Janeiro.

It is known as a popular beach resort destination with long stretches of fine white‑sand beaches, including the postcard‑like Praia do Forte where the 17th‑century Forte São Mateus stands at the water’s edge, offering panoramic ocean views.

The “Cold Cape” name comes from cooler upwelling ocean currents that keep the sea noticeably cooler than nearby coastal spots, while the town still enjoys a warm, subtropical climate with many sunny days and a lively beach culture of swimming, surfing, and freshwater lagoon and canal access. Cabo Frio also draws visitors with its mix of relaxed seaside atmosphere, colonial history, and nearby diving and snorkeling opportunities in reefs and clear waters along the coast.
