Cahal Pech Archaeological Reserve is a small but historically rich Maya site just outside the town of San Ignacio in the Cayo District of Belize, sitting on a hilltop above the Macal River valley. It was a palatial hilltop home for an elite Maya family, with continuous occupation beginning as early as around 1200 BCE and lasting through the Classic period until about the 9th century CE, making it one of the oldest recognizably Maya settlements in western Belize. The compact site covers about two acres and contains roughly 34 structures, including temples, residential buildings, plazas, a ball court, and a sweat house, all arranged around a central acropolis. Archaeologists have uncovered a royal burial chamber filled with jade and shell ornaments, pottery, and an impressive jade‑and‑shell mosaic mask, and today visitors can explore the restored ruins, climb one of the main temples for valley views, and see artifacts and site models in a small on‑site museum.
