Castello Malaspina di Massa
Massa, Italy, Italy
Castello Malaspina di Massa is a medieval fortress located on a rocky hill overlooking the city of Massa in Tuscany, Italy.
Its origins date back to the early Middle Ages, with the first documented mentions in the 12th century. During the 15th century, the castle came under the ownership of the Malaspina Marquises of Fosdinovo, who transformed it from a military fortification into a noble residence by modernizing defensive structures and adding Renaissance architectural features, a process completed in the 17th century.
The complex is divided into three main parts: the imposing defensive walls with bastions and artillery rooms, the residential quarters arranged around an elegant courtyard, and the medieval keep built directly on smoothed rock, which is notable for its unique construction. The castle features significant frescoes inside and on its facades. By the late 19th century, it was converted into a prison, a function it maintained until 1946.
Following restoration, Castello Malaspina di Massa is now accessible to the public and stands as a showcase of the development of fortification and residential architecture in Tuscany, offering impressive views of the surrounding Apuan Alps and coastline.
