Castle Czchów
Czchów, Poland, Poland
Castle Czchów in Czchów, Lesser Poland Voivodeship, Poland, originated at the turn of the 13th-14th centuries under King Wenceslaus II with a massive cylindrical Romanesque watchtower—28 meters high with walls up to several meters thick—built on Baszta Hill to guard the Dunajec River trade route to Hungary. Expanded into a royal upland castle during Władysław Łokietek's reign with stone perimeter walls, a gate tower, and residential buildings including vaulted cellars, it served as the seat of Czchów starostas and a judicial center, leased to noble families like Melsztyński before mid-17th-century Swedish Deluge destruction. By the 18th century repurposed as a prison until 1772, the site now preserves mainly the iconic tower and defensive wall foundations as a protected ruin, with partial restorations in 1928 and 1993 overlooking the scenic valley.
