Castle Drogo
UK, United Kingdom
Castle Drogo is a 20th‑century country‑house and castle perched on a granite outcrop above the Teign Gorge near Drewsteignton in Devon, England, right on the edge of Dartmoor National Park.
It was designed by the famous architect Sir Edwin Lutyens for wealthy tea‑merchant and retail baron Julius Drewe and built between 1911 and 1930, making it the last true castle constructed in England.
The building uses local granite and blends medieval‑style battlements and towers with modern comforts such as central heating and electric lighting, giving it the look of an ancient fortress while functioning as a grand early‑modern family home.
Today it is a Grade I listed building owned and managed by the National Trust, open to visitors who can explore its dramatic interiors, terraced gardens, and surrounding woodland walks overlooking the Teign valley.
