Castle in Czersk

Czersk, Masovian Voivodeship, Poland, Poland

Castle in Czersk, located on a high Vistula escarpment in Czersk, Masovian Voivodeship, Poland, evolved from a 10th-11th century Slavic gord into a major Gothic brick stronghold built between 1388 and 1410 by Duke Janusz I the Elder to replace outdated wooden defenses amid Lithuanian raids. Featuring a leveled hilltop with raised platform, perimeter walls, cylindrical towers, a grand residential "Dom Wielki," and later Renaissance additions like Queen Bona's 1520s courtyard palace after the site's incorporation into the Polish Crown, it served as a key Mazovian ducal seat until Warsaw's rise. Destroyed during the 1655 Swedish Deluge and further ruined by fires and neglect, the preserved remnants—including vaulted cellars and tower bases—now form an open-air museum with trails, reenactments, and views over orchards and the river valley.
