The Castle of Hasznos is a medieval hilltop fortress located above the village of Hasznos, now part of Pásztó, in Hungary’s Mátra Mountains.

Built in the early 14th century by the powerful Rátót family, it was strategically positioned to guard the Kövecses Valley and an important route through the mountains. The castle was part of a defensive network with the nearby Ágasvár and Óvár castles, helping to protect the region during a period of political conflict and military threats.

It changed ownership several times over the centuries and played a notable role in local administration and defense. In 1552, during the Ottoman advance into northern Hungary, the fortress was occupied without a fight and later suffered damage. Although it was strengthened again after its recapture, it gradually declined and eventually fell into ruin during the following centuries.

Today, only the ruins remain, standing on a rocky hill above the Hasznos Reservoir. Visitors can still see sections of walls and the foundations of former structures while enjoying panoramic views of the surrounding Mátra landscape, making the site a popular destination for hikers and history enthusiasts.
