The Castle of Sirok is a dramatic medieval hilltop fortress located in northern Hungary, rising above the village of Sirok on a volcanic rock outcrop.

Its origins date back to the Middle Ages, and it served as an important defensive stronghold due to its strategic position overlooking key routes through the region. The fortress was expanded and strengthened over the centuries, particularly during the 16th century when it became part of Hungary’s border defense system against the Ottoman Empire.

Although it eventually fell under Ottoman control, the castle remained a significant military site before losing its strategic importance in later centuries. One of the castle’s most distinctive features is its network of tunnels, chambers, and casemates carved directly into the soft rhyolite tuff rock beneath the fortress.

Combined with its irregular layout, bastions, and cliffside setting, these features make it one of Hungary’s most unique castles. Today, the partially restored ruins are a popular tourist attraction, offering exhibits, historic remains, and panoramic views of the surrounding Mátra hills and countryside.
