The Cedar Valley Arboretum & Botanic Gardens in Waterloo, Iowa, was founded in 1996 by community members seeking to create a vibrant green space near Hawkeye Community College.
Covering 40 acres of former farmland, the arboretum features a mix of native and exotic plants with themed gardens such as a Rose Garden, Children's Garden with playful sculptures, Display Gardens of annuals and perennials, and a Butterfly Conservation Meadow. It was the first garden in Iowa to create mosaicultures—living sculptures made from plants.
The arboretum also offers raised garden beds for accessibility and hosts educational programs and seasonal events like the popular Fall Harvest Festival. With winding trails, ponds, and orchards, the Cedar Valley Arboretum combines natural beauty, horticultural education, and community engagement in a family-friendly environment.
