Chudow Castle
Chudów, Poland, Poland
Chudów Castle in Chudów, near Gliwice in Silesian Voivodeship, Poland, began as a 15th-century wooden motte stronghold owned by Johannes de Hodow, evolving into a brick Renaissance residence in the 1530s under Jan Gierałtowski who built a rectangular tower keep and later wings around a courtyard with arcades. Held by wealthy Silesian nobles like the Gierałtowskis for over a century, it endured imperial plundering in 1657 before 1717 Baroque splendor under the Foglar family, frequent 18th-century ownership changes, and 1837 reconstructions that softened its defenses. Burned in 1875 under Count Schaffgotsch who created picturesque ruins, the site was secured and partially rebuilt by the Chudów Castle Foundation from the late 20th century, now featuring a museum in the restored tower amid wetlands.
