Citadel of Aleppo
Aleppo, Syria
The Citadel of Aleppo is a massive medieval fortress that rises on a hill in the heart of Aleppo, Syria.
Considered one of the oldest and largest castles in the world, the site has been occupied since at least the 3rd millennium BC and has been used by many civilizations, including the Arameans, Romans, Byzantines, Ayyubids, Mamluks, and Ottomans. Most of the fortress visible today dates from the Ayyubid period in the 12th and 13th centuries. It is famous for its imposing stone bridge, fortified entrance, massive walls, towers, palaces, mosques, and underground structures, all designed to defend the city from attack.
As the dominant landmark of the Ancient City of Aleppo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the citadel is one of Syria’s most important historical monuments. Despite suffering damage during recent conflicts and earthquakes, it remains a powerful symbol of Aleppo’s long history and cultural heritage.
