Verified City Palace

Udaipur, Rajasthan, India

The City Palace in Udaipur, Rajasthan, is a grand palace complex built over nearly 400 years starting in 1559 by Maharana Udai Singh II, founder of Udaipur and ruler of the Mewar dynasty.

It is situated on a ridge along the eastern banks of Lake Pichola and is the largest palace complex in Rajasthan. The architecture is a harmonious blend of Rajasthani Rajput and Mughal styles, incorporating elements of medieval European and Chinese design.

Made primarily of granite and marble, the palace features intricate mirror work, murals, colorful glass windows, and sprawling courtyards connected by zigzag corridors for defense purposes. It includes 11 smaller palaces, such as the Sheesh Mahal (Palace of Mirrors) and Mor Chowk (Peacock Courtyard), with ornate balconies, towers, and gardens overlooking the lake and city.

The complex has historical significance as the seat of the Mewar rulers who administered their kingdom here and it houses museums exhibiting royal artifacts, paintings, and armory. The City Palace remains a living emblem of Udaipur’s royal heritage and continues to be a major cultural and tourist attraction known for its stunning panoramic views and artistic craftsmanship.
