Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens
Georgia, United States
Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens, located about 10 miles southwest of downtown Savannah, Georgia, is a 51-acre public garden originally known as the Bamboo Farm.
It began in the late 1880s when Mrs. H. B. Miller planted three giant Japanese timber bamboo plants, which grew into an impressive bamboo grove. In 1919, botanist David Fairchild and his friend Barbour Lathrop purchased the site and leased it to the USDA as a plant introduction station. The USDA operated it until 1979, after which the University of Georgia took over in the early 1980s, continuing research and developing the gardens.
Today, Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens features a wide variety of plants, including camellias, Louisiana irises, palms, orchids, and extensive bamboo collections, along with Italian Renaissance formal gardens and water gardens. The site combines horticultural research, education, and public enjoyment, offering walking trails, educational programs, and peaceful natural beauty for visitors.
