Colmberg Castle
Colmberg, Germany, Germany
Colmberg Castle is a well-preserved medieval hilltop castle overlooking the town of Colmberg in Bavaria. Its origins date back to the 12th and 13th centuries, and it became an important stronghold after being acquired by Burgrave Frederick IV of Nuremberg in 1318. The castle remained a significant possession of the Hohenzollern family for nearly 500 years. Perched on the Heuberg above the Altmühl Valley, the fortress played both military and administrative roles throughout the Middle Ages. Over the centuries it was expanded and maintained rather than falling into ruin, helping preserve much of its historic character and architecture. Today, Colmberg Castle is one of the best-preserved castles in Franconia and serves as a castle hotel and visitor attraction. Its medieval atmosphere, panoramic views, and rich history make it one of the most distinctive landmarks in the region.
