The Commewijne River Plantations in the Commewijne District, just across the river from Paramaribo, are a collection of historic estates that played a central role in Suriname’s colonial economy.

During the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries, these plantations produced sugar, coffee, cocoa, and other crops, relying first on enslaved African labor and later on indentured workers from Asia. Today, visitors can explore former plantations such as Mariënburg, Frederiksdorp, and Peperpot, where old factory ruins, restored colonial buildings, canals, and nature trails reveal the region’s rich and complex history.

Many sites have been preserved as museums, guesthouses, or nature parks, offering insight into Suriname’s cultural heritage. Set along the scenic Commewijne River, the plantation area is also known for its peaceful countryside, river tours, wildlife, and multicultural villages, making it one of the most popular day-trip destinations near Paramaribo.
