Cotton Tree
Freetown, Western Area, Sierra Leone
The Cotton Tree is one of the most important historical symbols of Freetown and Sierra Leone.
Located in the heart of the city, this famous kapok tree became closely linked to the founding of Freetown in 1792, when formerly enslaved Africans who had gained their freedom are said to have gathered beneath its branches to give thanks after arriving in the area. For generations, the tree served as a landmark, meeting place, and powerful symbol of freedom, resilience, and national identity.
It appeared in cultural traditions, historical accounts, and was recognized as one of the country's most treasured heritage sites. Although much of the historic tree was damaged during a severe storm in 2023, the site remains a place of great cultural and historical significance, continuing to represent the origins and spirit of Freetown and the people of Sierra Leone.
