Craggaunowen Castle & Crannóg
Kilmurry, Ireland, Ireland
Craggaunowen Castle, located near Kilmurry in County Clare, Ireland, is a 16th-century tower house built around 1550 by John MacSioda MacNamara, descending from a prominent family.
The castle was initially a fortified residence but fell into ruin following the Cromwellian confiscations in the mid-17th century. In the 1960s, antiquarian John Hunt restored the castle and developed the site into an archaeological open-air museum that brings to life ancient Irish history, particularly Celtic life.
The museum includes vital reconstructions such as a Crannóg, which is a recreated Celtic lake dwelling characteristic of early settlements used from the late Bronze Age through the early Christian periods. The site also features a ringfort, a Bronze Age cooking site known as Fulachta Fia, and a standing stone with Ogham inscriptions.
Visitors can experience historical reenactments, ancient crafts, and traditional farming techniques, making it an immersive journey into Ireland's early past. The museum also houses rare breeds of animals typical of ancient Irish life.
The site is notable for the inclusion of the Brendan Boat, a hide boat used in a historic reenactment of St. Brendan’s legendary voyage to America in 1978. Craggaunowen offers rich insights into Ireland's Celtic ancestors and their way of life in an engaging outdoor setting.
