Verified Lissanoure Castle

Northern Ireland, Ireland

Lissanoure Castle in Northern Ireland is a historic estate located on an island in Loughguile, County Antrim.

The site has been settled since Celtic times due to its naturally defensive position, with the earliest recorded castle dating back to around 1300, attributed to either Sir Philip Savage or Richard Óg de Burgh, second Earl of Ulster. The estate was owned by the O’Hara family in the 14th century before being purchased in 1733 by George Macartney, an influential Irish politician and diplomat.

The Macartney family greatly expanded and remodeled the castle in Gothic and classical styles during the late 18th century.

The main structure was largely destroyed in 1847 due to a massive explosion caused by stored gunpowder, but notable features like the Tudor revival archway and clocktower entrance remain. Today, the castle courtyard has been renovated for events and functions such as weddings and film shoots, and the estate is still privately owned and managed by the Mackie family, who have preserved its historic and agricultural heritage.
