Crantock
Cornwall, United Kingdom
Crantock is a coastal village and civil parish in Cornwall, United Kingdom, located about two miles southwest of Newquay.
Its history dates back to 460 AD when Irish hermits, including St Carantoc, founded an oratory and began preaching Christianity, giving the village its name. The village was once known as Langurroc, meaning "The Dwelling of the Monks," and parts of the original settlement may be buried beneath the sand dunes behind Crantock Beach.
The sandy beach at Crantock is bordered by the tidal River Gannel and features cliffs home to seabirds and caves with local legends, including a rock carving of a woman’s face and poem attributed to a local artist. The Norman church of St Carantoc, around which the oldest part of the village is built, dates from the 14th and 15th centuries.
Crantock is known for its picturesque setting, historic landmarks, and natural beauty, making it a popular destination for families and visitors exploring Cornwall’s north coast.
