Verified Cummer Museum of Art and Gardens

Jacksonville, Florida, United States

The Cummer Museum of Art and Gardens in Jacksonville, Florida, was established in 1958 following the bequest of Ninah Cummer, an art collector, garden enthusiast, and civic leader who donated her art collection, gardens, and riverfront home to create the museum.

The museum opened to the public in 1961 and has since expanded its collection to over 6,000 works spanning more than 8,000 years of artistic history, including European and American paintings, sculptures, and decorative arts. The gardens, originally designed in the early 20th century by renowned landscape architects such as the Olmsted Brothers and Ellen Biddle Shipman, include the English, Italian, and Olmsted gardens with native Florida plants, live oak trees, reflecting pools, fountains, and sculptures.

These gardens were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2010. The museum serves as a cultural beacon offering art exhibitions, educational programs, and community events, all set against the scenic backdrop of the St. Johns River, making it a popular destination for both art and nature lovers in Northeast Florida.
