Czocha Castle
Sucha, Poland, Poland
Czocha Castle in Sucha, near Leśna in Lower Silesia, Poland, originated as a mid-13th-century Gothic border fortress built on a rocky promontory above the Kwisa River by Czech King Wenceslaus I or local Piast dukes to guard the Lusatian frontier, initially featuring a residential tower, courtyard, and drawbridge amid defensive walls.
Passing through noble families like von Nostitz who fortified it during Hussite sieges and Thirty Years' War threats, it underwent 16th-century Renaissance reconstruction with bastions, a moat, armory, and multi-story palace wings before a 1793 fire prompted eclectic Gothic-Renaissance rebuilding around 1910 by architect Bodo Ebhardt.
Today, the well-preserved stronghold—complete with cylindrical tower, hidden passages, and lake views from the Leśniańskie Reservoir—operates as a hotel, museum, and event venue hosting knightly tournaments and ghost tours.
