Damascus Citadel
Damascus, Syria
The Damascus Citadel, located in the northwest corner of the old city walls, was originally fortified in 1076 CE and extensively rebuilt between 1203 and 1216 by Saladin's brother Al-Adil to counter new siege technologies like the counterweight trebuchet.
Unlike typical hilltop fortresses, this citadel sits on flat ground near the Barada River, with high, thick walls protected by 14 massive towers, designed to host trebuchets for defense.
It features three gates and integrated hydraulic systems to control water flow, contributing to its defense. Over centuries, the citadel has changed hands through Seljuq, Ayyubid, Mongol, Mamluk, and Ottoman rules, serving variously as a military stronghold and barracks. Today, it remains a monumental part of Damascus's historic landscape, with ongoing restoration efforts to preserve its medieval architecture and significance.
