Dangriga
Belize, Belize
Dangriga is a coastal town in southern Belize and the capital of the Stann Creek District, located on the Caribbean shore at the mouth of the North Stann Creek River. It was founded in the early 19th century by Garifuna refugees from Honduras and is now the largest and oldest Garifuna settlement in the country, often called the “cultural capital of Belize” because of its strong influence on Garifuna music, language, and traditions such as punta and Garifuna Settlement Day. The town is an important local hub for fishing, agriculture, and trade, with a largely garinagu, Creole, and Mestizo population and a lively, informal streetscape rather than a heavily touristed resort. Dangriga also serves as a practical gateway for boat trips to nearby cayes and marine areas like Tobacco Caye, South Water Caye, and Glover’s Reef Atoll.
