Dendrological Garden of the University of Life Sciences
Poznań, Poland, Poland
The Dendrological Garden of the University of Life Sciences in Poznań (Ogród Dendrologiczny Uniwersytetu Przyrodniczego w Poznaniu) is a specialist arboretum covering approximately 20 hectares (about 6 acres of forested hills) located in the western part of Poznań, near the village of Zielonka, at ul. Wojska Polskiego 71c.
Officially opened in 1925, the garden was created to serve as a "living laboratory" for dendrology students of the University, with its main objective being to collect trees and shrubs for scientific, didactic, and educational purposes, particularly emphasizing species of Polish dendroflora (native Polish trees and shrubs).
The collection currently includes over 1,000 taxa of woody plants—trees, shrubs, and bushes—arranged in systematic order, with approximately 900–1,000 different kinds of trees, and the most valuable feature is one of the largest collections of native blackberry and raspberry species (Rubus) in Europe, which received the status of a National Collection in 2007.
The garden serves as a scientific and didactic unit of the Faculty of Forestry and Wood Technology at the University of Life Sciences in Poznań, where over 200 students annually participate in practical training sessions, and numerous scientific studies are conducted on morphological variability, introduction, acclimatization, and cultivation methods for endangered and dying-out species of Polish dendroflora.
