Verified Diószegi Sámuel Iskolai Botanikus Kert

Debrecen, Hungary, Hungary

Diószegi Sámuel Iskolai Botanikus Kert (School Botanical Garden) is a 2.2-hectare protected botanical garden located at Hollós utca 3 in Debrecen's Nyugali district, right next to the famous Debreceni Nagyerdő park, owned by the Kós Károly Művészeti Szakgimnázium és Kollégium (Kós Károly Art Vocational School).

Founded in 1983 by biology teacher Tihanyi György on a former construction debris site, it was declared a local protected area by Debrecen city in 1992 and has been nationally renowned for 40 years. The garden houses over 1,300-1,400 taxons (plant species), making it Debrecen's richest dendrological collection, featuring rare plants including deciduous trees and shrubs, needle and scale-leaved trees, evergreen leafy taxa, and uniquely large frost-tolerant bamboo collections that distinguish it from other gardens.

The site includes a 120-square-meter greenhouse, rich insect, bird, and animal wildlife, and has been lovingly maintained and expanded over decades. It is open Monday–Thursday 8 AM–8 PM, Friday 8 AM–5 PM, and Saturdays–Sundays only for groups of 10+ people and thematic photography with prior reservation, with a very friendly entrance fee and parking available at the entrance.
