Dumbarton Oaks
Washington, DC, United States
Dumbarton Oaks in Washington, D.C., is a historic estate in the Georgetown neighborhood that served as the residence of diplomat Robert Woods Bliss and his wife Mildred Barnes Bliss.
The estate combines a Colonial Revival mansion with about 54 acres of gardens designed by renowned landscape architect Beatrix Farrand, featuring terraced gardens, a wilderness area, and a formal garden layout. The Blisses gave Dumbarton Oaks to Harvard University in 1940, turning it into a research library and museum focused on Byzantine, Pre-Columbian, and garden and landscape studies.
The estate is also historically significant as the site of the 1944 Dumbarton Oaks Conference, where allied powers laid the groundwork for the United Nations. Over time, the estate has expanded to include additional buildings such as the Fellows Building and a garden library, and it underwent renovations to restore its period rooms and enhance its public and scholarly mission.
The property remains a unique blend of art, history, architecture, and horticulture, with a collection of rare books, art, and beautifully maintained gardens open for public tours and research.
