The Duomo di Milano is a huge church in the center of Milan, in northern Italy. It is one of the largest and most beautiful cathedrals in the world. The building is a symbol of Milan and is known for its many spires and statues made from pinkish-white marble.
Construction of the Duomo began in 1386. It took nearly 600 years to finish. Different styles and ideas from many times and artists shaped its look. The last details of the cathedral were completed in 1965. Because of its long history, many different builders and artists worked on it over the centuries.
The Duomo is famous for its Gothic architecture. It is covered with over 3,000 statues and 135 pointed spires. The tallest spire is 108.5 meters high, and at the very top stands a golden statue called the “Madonnina,” which is an important symbol for the people of Milan.
Inside, the church is very tall and wide. It can fit up to 40,000 or even 60,000 people for big ceremonies. It has one main nave (center space) and four side aisles, separated by tall pillars. The windows are large and colorful, letting in beautiful light.
The outside and rooftop of the Duomo are special. Visitors can climb up or take an elevator to walk on the roof, where they can see beautiful views of Milan and the Alps on a clear day. The rooftop is decorated with statues, stone carvings, and pointed arches.
The Duomo is still an active church, and important events and services happen here. It is dedicated to St. Mary of the Nativity. Many tourists come every year to admire its beauty, history, and the peaceful square in front of it.
