Ebnet Castle
Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany, Germany
Ebnet Castle is a baroque mansion located in Ebnet, a district in the east of Freiburg im Breisgau, Baden-Württemberg, Germany, and is considered the most significant of all Breisgau castles.
The current rococo castle was built between 1748 and 1751 for Freiherr Ferdinand Sebastian von Sickingen after plans by Swiss architect Johann Jakob Fechter, replacing an earlier manor house that had been destroyed by the French. The castle was decorated with works by prominent Baroque artists including Christian Wenzinger, who created garden sculptures and architectural details, and Benedikt Gambs, who painted the ceiling fresco depicting the four elements in the garden hall in 1750.
Since 1811, the castle has been owned by the Barons of Gayling von Altheim family, who still live there today, making it a private residence that is only accessible to the public during special cultural events like the Ebneter Kultursommer festival, the Ebneter Christmas market, and the Day of Open Monuments.
The extensive property includes a two-story manor house with a double-winged staircase on the park side, a chapel that was converted into a kitchen in the 19th century but returned to use as a chapel in 1958, a large barn built around 1830, and sprawling gardens to the south, west, and east partially enclosed by a castle wall.
