Eddy Arboretum at the Institute of Forest Genetics
California, United States
The Eddy Arboretum at the Institute of Forest Genetics in Placerville, California, was established in 1925 by James Garfield Eddy in response to the extensive deforestation across the United States.
Eddy privately funded the project to selectively breed superior pine trees to improve lumber quality and yield. The institute brought together pine seeds from around 40 different countries, eventually cultivating over 100 species in what became the largest and most complete arboretum of pines in the world by the 1930s.
Research scientists measured various traits such as growth rate, frost resistance, and form, cross-breeding the most desirable trees to produce hybrids with improved characteristics like increased frost tolerance or faster growth. Initially privately funded, the institute was donated in 1935 to the U.S. Forest Service to allow broader funding and research.
It remains a critical center for forest genetics research and conservation, continuing to innovate in tree breeding and forest sustainability today.
