Edgerton Park Conservancy
New Haven, Connecticut, United States
Edgerton Park Conservancy in New Haven, Connecticut, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and maintaining Edgerton Park, a 25-acre public park that was originally a private estate owned by Frederick F. Brewster.
The estate, once owned by Eli Whitney and later redesigned in the style of 18th-century English landscape gardens, was bequeathed to the city with the condition that Brewster’s large mansion be demolished, which happened after his wife’s death in 1963. While the main house was removed, several historic structures like the carriage house, greenhouses, gatehouse, and original walls remain intact.
Since its formation in 1972, the Conservancy has worked closely with the city to restore the gardens and buildings, run educational programs, and maintain horticultural activities including a greenhouse and community gardens. The park is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and offers a tranquil green space with a rich historical legacy and ongoing community engagement in gardening and preservation.
