Egloffstein, Germany, Germany

---

Egloffstein Castle is a historic medieval hilltop castle overlooking the village of Egloffstein in Bavaria’s Franconian Switzerland region.

Built around the 12th century and first mentioned in records in 1358, it has served for centuries as the ancestral seat of the noble von Egloffstein family. The castle played an important role in regional history and endured numerous conflicts, including the First Margrave War, the Landshut War of Succession, the German Peasants’ War, and the Thirty Years’ War.

Although it suffered repeated damage, it was rebuilt and expanded several times over the centuries. Today, Egloffstein Castle remains largely preserved and stands prominently on a rocky spur above the Trubach Valley. It is one of the best-known landmarks in Franconian Switzerland and can be visited, offering visitors a glimpse into the region’s medieval heritage and scenic landscapes.
