Falkenstein Castle Ruins
Breitnau, Germany, Germany
Falkenstein Castle Ruins in Breitnau, Germany, are the remnants of a medieval hill castle built around 1200, located at 617.6 meters above sea level near Freiburg im Breisgau in the Black Forest's Höllental valley entrance, where the Lower Höllental and Engenbach valleys meet close to Falkensteig village. Positioned on a steep, hard-to-access rocky crag, the site was once occupied by ministeriales (knightly servants) and now holds only sparse wall remnants, making it one of the least preserved castle ruins in the Breisgau region. Its isolated, dramatic setting amid forested hills blends history with Black Forest hiking trails, offering a quiet glimpse into medieval fortifications despite minimal structures remaining.
