Fletcher Moss Botanical Garden
Manchester, United Kingdom
Fletcher Moss Botanical Garden in Manchester, United Kingdom, was donated to the city by Alderman Fletcher Moss in 1915 and is a mix of botanical garden and wildlife habitat.
The garden features a unique walled rock garden created by botanist Robert Wood Williamson on a south-facing slope, which allows many rare and non-hardy plants to thrive, including royal ferns and giant Gunnera plants. The gardens also have ornamental trees like Chusan palms and dawn redwoods.
The site includes the Old Parsonage with gardens full of historic yew and cedar trees, and graves of Fletcher Moss’s pets. The Old Parsonage now serves as a community center and art gallery. The gardens are cared for by local volunteers and include sports facilities, walking paths, and a family-run café.
Historically, the garden was the birthplace of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, originating from the Plumage League formed to protect birds from hunting for fashion. Today, Fletcher Moss is a popular place for relaxation, nature observation, and community events.
