Fort Jesus Museum is a historic Portuguese fort and museum on Mombasa Island, Kenya, built between 1593 and 1596 to guard the Old Port of Mombasa and protect Portuguese interests along the East African coast. Designed by Italian architect Giovanni Battista Cairati, it is one of the best‑preserved 16th‑century Portuguese military fortifications in the world and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011. Over the centuries the fort changed hands several times, controlled at different times by the Portuguese, Omanis, British, and later the independent Kenyan government, and today it operates as a museum managed by the National Museums of Kenya. Inside, visitors see archaeological finds, historical displays, and structures that trace the region’s role in trade, slavery, and cultural exchange among African, Arab, Turkish, Persian, and European groups, making it Mombasa’s most‑visited heritage attraction.
