Fort Mandholi
Mandholi, Rajasthan, India
Fort Mandholi is an old three‑story fort in the small town of Mandholi in eastern Rajasthan, about 90 km from Jaipur and 5 km from Neem ka Thana, historically known as a strategic watchpoint visible from afar and once used as a fire‑warning structure.
Commanding the plains where the famous 1767 Battle of Maonda and Mandholi was fought between the Rajput forces of Jaipur and the Jat forces of Bharatpur, the fort has been a symbol of the region’s turbulent history in which tens of thousands reportedly died. Originally held by Meena rulers, then Jats, and finally taken by the Tanwar Rajputs in the 16th century, the fort later came under local Thakurs such as the Thakur of Maonda, who played a key role in the battle.
Though now in a dilapidated state with many parts collapsed, the remaining walls and the four corner bases of its once‑grand structure can still be seen, especially in aerial views, and the layout originally included an underground storage room, a main floor with five rooms and circular pillars for defense, and a top floor for observation and storage.
