Friendship Botanic Gardens
Pottawattamie Park, Indiana, United States
Friendship Botanic Gardens, located in Michigan City, Indiana, was founded in 1934 as the International Friendship Gardens, initiated by the Stauffer brothers who owned a nursery in Indiana.
The gardens originally showcased 14 ethnic gardens representing countries around the world, along with the unique Theater of Nations, which hosted musicals, plays, and cultural events. Inspired by the 1933 Chicago World's Fair theme of peace and friendship among nations, the gardens became a major tourist destination through the mid-20th century.
Over time, the gardens fell into disrepair, but volunteers, led by assistant Jean Houck, helped restore and maintain the site. Today, the gardens have been rejuvenated and now serve as a popular outdoor venue for weddings, events, and leisure activities, celebrating global cultures and fostering community and friendship.
