Funplex
Houston, United States
Funplex in Houston, Texas, originally opened as Fame City on June 12, 1986, on Beechnut Street near South Highway 6 as America's first "entertainment mall," a massive 200,000-square-foot indoor complex with a Ferris wheel, roller skating rink, 40-lane bowling alley, mini-golf, arcade games, rides, and a movie theater, later adding an adjacent water park called Fame City Waterworks.
Facing financial challenges, it was sold in 1991 to the Chado brothers, rebranded as Funplex, and continued operating with attractions like laser tag, go-karts, a play area, and event spaces despite ownership changes and competition from chains.
The iconic air-conditioned family destination, beloved for indoor thrills escaping Houston's heat, officially closed in 2025 with a liquidation auction for redevelopment, ending nearly 40 years of history.
