Fürstbischöfliche Residenz

Eichstätt, Germany, Germany

---

The Fürstbischöfliche Residenz (Prince-Bishops’ Residence) in Eichstätt is a grand Baroque palace that served as the official seat of the Prince-Bishops of Eichstätt.

Built in the early 18th century on the site of an older medieval residence, it was designed by leading court architects including Jakob Engel, Gabriel de Gabrieli, and Maurizio Pedetti. The residence is renowned for its elegant architecture and richly decorated interiors, especially the magnificent staircase and the ornate Mirror Hall, both considered highlights of Baroque art in Bavaria.

The palace stands on Eichstätt’s impressive Residenzplatz, one of the city’s most distinctive historic squares. After the end of the Prince-Bishopric in the early 19th century, the building served various governmental and residential functions. Today, it remains one of Eichstätt’s most important landmarks and is used as the administrative seat of the Eichstätt district authority while preserving its historical and cultural significance.
