Giechburg

Scheßlitz, Germany, Germany

---

Giechburg is a historic hilltop castle overlooking the town of Scheßlitz in Upper Franconia, Bavaria.

Archaeological evidence shows that the site was occupied as early as prehistoric times, while the castle itself was first mentioned in written records in 1125. Over the centuries, it became an important stronghold and later came under the control of the Prince-Bishops of Bamberg. The castle was destroyed and rebuilt several times during conflicts such as the Hussite wars, the German Peasants’ War, and the Second Margrave War.

Around 1600, it was rebuilt in a Renaissance style and later used as a hunting lodge and administrative center rather than a military fortress. Today, Giechburg is a partially restored castle complex and a popular destination for visitors. Its elevated location offers impressive views across the Bamberg region, and the site hosts cultural events, exhibitions, conferences, and hospitality facilities while preserving an important part of Franconian history.
