Giza Zoo
Giza, Egypt, Egypt
Giza Zoo is a large zoological garden in Giza, on the west bank of the Nile just outside central Cairo, Egypt.
Covering about 80 acres (roughly 32 hectares), it is one of Egypt’s oldest and most important green spaces, originally opened in 1891 by Khedive Ismail and often described as the first zoo in the Middle East and one of the oldest in Africa.
The park holds thousands of animals, including lions, elephants, giraffes, monkeys, birds, reptiles, and other species, many of them endangered or no longer found in the wild in Egypt, and it also features a zoological museum, artificial lakes, streams, bridges, and a sizeable collection of old, imported trees.
Giza Zoo has served for over a century as both a major recreational spot for locals and a significant conservation and educational site, although it has been closed since 2023 for extensive renovation and is expected to reopen in 2026 with modernized enclosures and improved visitor facilities.
