The Great Mosque of Touba in Touba, Senegal, is one of the largest mosques in Africa and the spiritual center of the Mouride Brotherhood, a major Sufi Islamic order founded by Sheikh Amadou Bamba in 1887.
Construction began in 1924 and was completed in 1963, with continuous expansions since. The mosque features a vast prayer hall, three large domes, and seven minarets, including the tallest one called Lamp Fall, named after Sheikh Ibrahima Fall, Bamba’s influential disciple.
The mosque also houses the tombs of Sheikh Amadou Bamba and his family, making it a pilgrimage site attracting millions during the annual Grand Magal festival, celebrating Bamba’s legacy. The mosque and the city symbolize religious devotion, resistance to colonialism, and the cultural identity of Senegal’s Mouride community.
