Großengstingen
Engstingen, Germany, Germany
Großengstingen is a village and district of the municipality of Engstingen in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, located on the northern edge of the Swabian Alps at 680–750 meters elevation on the Alb plateau, about 15 kilometers south of Reutlingen.
First mentioned in 788 as Anegestingin (from an Alemannic personal name), the village lies at the intersection of several Roman roads and has Alemannic settlement origins, with row graves found at the eastern exit. The village's main landmark is the Catholic St. Martin's Parish Church, a Rococo-style building constructed 1717–1719 by Baroque architect Franz Beer von Bleichten for Kloster Zwiefalten, attached to a medieval tower section, with the church and parish first documented in 1275.
The settlement is a haufendorf (irregular village) in an open location along Bundesstraße 313, with new residential areas developed in the north and south, plus a Bundeswehr settlement called Berg am Kreuzberg established in 1958, and includes a cemetery cemetery and row graves from ancient times.
