Gródek Nad Dunajcem
Gródek nad Dunajcem, Poland, Poland
Gródek nad Dunajcem is a picturesque village in southern Poland's Lesser Poland Voivodeship on the Pogórze Rożnowskie plateau by Lake Rożnowskie, formed in the 14th century from merging Gródek and Kobyle settlements along the historic Amber Road.
Named after a now-vanished early 14th-century knightly castle built by Klemens de Gródek on Grodzisko Hill—once guarding the Dunajec valley against invasions and owned by brothers from Słupca before passing to Archbishop Piotr of Kurów in 1410—its ruins were visible into the early 20th century but submerged as Monkey Island after damming created the reservoir.
Today a popular lakeside resort with beaches, recreational areas, and scenic cliffs, it features WWII-era Nazi governor Hans Frank's luxury villa (1940s) on Koszarka cliff, blending medieval defensive heritage with modern tourism amid forested hills.
