Hadwen Arboretum
Worcester, Massachusetts, United States
Hadwen Arboretum in Worcester, Massachusetts, spans about 26 acres and was willed to Clark University in 1907 by Obadiah Hadwen, a prominent local horticulturist and former Commissioner of Parks.
Hadwen developed the site, known historically as Magnolia Farm, over 64 years, planting over 1,000 trees representing some 100 species, including rare varieties like magnolias and Japanese gingko. The arboretum features diverse tree species and natural forested landscapes and has historically served educational purposes, supporting botany and arboriculture studies.
In recent years, Clark students and faculty have revitalized the area by clearing invasive species, maintaining trails, and promoting its use as a community green space. Now a valued urban forest and part of Worcester’s East-West Trail, the Hadwen Arboretum offers a quiet retreat for nature lovers and a living laboratory for ecological and botanical research.
