Hama Castle

Hama, Syria, Syria

Hama Castle is a mostly ruined fortress in Hama, Syria, on the banks of the Orontes River. Its site goes back to ancient times, and the fortress changed hands many times under the Romans, early Islamic rulers, the Zengids, Ayyubids, Mongols, and later the Ottomans. Much of what remained was damaged by earthquakes and warfare, so today it survives mainly as archaeological ruins rather than a complete castle.
