Handschuhsheim, Tiefburg
Heidelberg, Germany, Germany
Handschuhsheim is a historic residential district in the northwest of Heidelberg, Germany, first mentioned in written records in 765 AD and known today for its village-like square, cafes, and proximity to nature including the Heiligenberg hill.
Its most famous landmark is the Tiefburg (also called Burg Handschuhsheim), a medieval water castle ruin located northwest of the old village core that dates back at least to the 13th century and was originally surrounded by a 12-meter-wide moat fed by the Mühlbach stream.
The castle served as the ancestral seat of the Herren von Handschuhsheim family until 1600, then passed to the Herren von Helmstatt family who owned it for over three centuries, but it suffered heavy damage during 17th-century wars including the Thirty Years' War and was destroyed and uninhabitable by 1674. Today the Tiefburg looks more intact than Heidelberg's famous castle ruin, with solid walls, visible arrow slits, and intact crenelations, though only the foundation walls, vaults of the tower, and defensive walls remain of the core castle.
The restored residential building now houses event rooms for local clubs and the office and historical archive of the Handschuhsheim district association, while the castle courtyard hosts numerous local events and festivals. The site is accessible via tram lines 21, 23, 24, or 5 to Hans-Thoma-Platz followed by a short walk, and while major restoration work currently means it can only be viewed externally, it remains a historical landmark and popular alternative to Heidelberg's more touristy castle.
