Hawai‘i Tropical Botanical Garden
Hawaii, United States
Hawai‘i Tropical Botanical Garden is a 17-acre garden located at the entrance of Onomea Valley along the coast of the Hāmākua district on Hawai‘i Island.
The garden was purchased in 1977 by Dan and Pauline Lutkenhouse, who dedicated seven years to clearing the dense jungle by hand and carefully preserving the native vegetation and soil. Opening to the public in 1984, the garden now features over 2,500 species of tropical and subtropical plants from around the world, including massive collections of palms, anthuriums, gingers, bromeliads, and orchids.
A highlight of the garden is the Onomea Falls, a multi-tiered waterfall that flows through the property into Onomea Bay. The garden is designed with winding boardwalks and trails that follow the natural shape of the land, providing visitors with scenic views and an immersive tropical rainforest experience. It operates as a nonprofit dedicated to conservation, education, and the preservation of rare and endangered plant species native to Hawaii and beyond.
